Happy Valentine’s Day! What a wonderful day for love! I hope you are enjoying this delightful holiday with those you adore. This celebration does not necessarily need to be celebrated with a dozen red roses, a candle-lit dinner for two, and decadent chocolates (although all of those are delightful-- especially the chocolate). There are fabulous ways to be festive and unique this year!
Rooted in pagan tradition and celebrated by various cultures around the world and throughout time, Valentine’s Day has become one of the most celebrated holidays in the western world.
Are you wondering how you should celebrate February 14th this year? Here are a few unique date ideas to help fuel your imagination:
Go to a show-- weather it’s a hilarious comedy show, fun concert, or classic musical, shows are a great way to make an evening. Add in a Food Truck dinner stop and a chilly walk through the park and this is sure to put some fun in your night!
Take Cooking Class--While on our honeymoon my husband and I took a cooking class. He was a little reluctant at first but quickly grew to love it! Now, every time we prepare the meals we had learned together, it is like re-living the romance once again!
Food & Beverage Pairing-- You can do this at home or at restaurants! One of my favorite sites is http://www.foodandwinepairing.org/wine_pairing_board.html which helps you to pair up fantastic combinations. My favorites include French Brie & Sauvignon Blanc, Dark Chocolate & Australian Muscat, or classic Oysters & Champagne!
Volunteer-- Why not give back this 2014 and volunteer together. Doing something selfless can not only make you closer, but will make those in your community happy! Rhode Island has a fantastic website to help find the perfect volunteering option for you two: http://serverhodeisland.org
Throw a Dinner Party-- If you are not particularly fond of one-on-one dates, or your have recently started dating, a group dinner party can be a great way to have a “low-key” Valentine’s Day. Have your closest friends (singles & couples both welcome) over for a nice dinner and a round of your favorite board game and relax! The more the merrier!
For my husband and I, Valentine’s Day is always a little unique. It happens to be that my birthday is rather close to Valentine’s Day, so my husband and I usually forego any gift giving. One of our favorite things to do, and I mentioned earlier, is cook together. What’s on the menu this year? Sushi! We usually mix fresh vegetables with salmon lox and lots of wasabi to make homemade Spicy Salmon Maki Rolls. We taught ourselves how to make sushi from scratch by watching YouTube videos and researching great recipes sites, like this one: http://www.mediterrasian.com/delicious_recipes_sushi.htm
However you decide to spend your Valentine’s day this year-be it traditional or unconventional- I hope you have a blast and share the love!
Fun Fact: Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.- Thanks History Channel for this Knowledge Nugget!
