Designing a mantle piece is a great way to practice your wedding style at home! Every designer is different, however there are a few easy "tried and true" methods to DIY your own creative look!
When designing mantles, tables or other elements of events, I use 3 basic principles:
The Anchor-- The Main Attraction
The Weights-- The balance to the Attraction
and The Fillers-- small enhancements to smooth out the overall look

In this example you will see taller Weights and a wider Anchor, however you can play around with this pattern. You could do the same lantern in 2 different heights for a more polished and cleaner look. For something more "Chip and Joanna" you could use a wreath or antiques. There are so many ways to use these principles.
First we made a sketch and plan of our general concept.

Then we laid out and cleaned our materials (and we dusted off the mantle!)

After that, we began in the center and worked our way out.

Adding more and more filler as we went.

Finally we made our Anchor and supplemented our filler (Yes, wine WAS involved!!)

We did a little tweaking as we finalized our design.

Then- BOOM!- it came together!

We hope you enjoyed this off season fun and please send us pictures of YOUR mantles!!
